The Master’s Program in Biomedical Sciences (PSMIB), Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya, conducted the Inaugural Lecture and Orientation Program for New Students of the Even Semester, Academic Year 2025/2026 on February 6, 2026. This activity was organized as an initial step to welcome and equip new students with academic insights, learning systems, and supporting services throughout their study period at PSMIB.
The event was officially opened by the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya. In the opening remarks, the faculty leadership encouraged new students to make the most of their study period, actively engage in academic and research activities, and contribute to the advancement of biomedical sciences.
The inaugural lecture featured a scientific presentation entitled “Umami Ingestion Suppresses Aggression by Activating Vagus Nerve and Modulating iNTS-CeA Circuitry”, delivered by Dr. Dewi Mustika, M.Biomed., Ph.D.
, from the Department of Neurophysiology and Brain Science, Nagoya City University, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Japan. The lecture discussed recent findings on the neurophysiological mechanisms linking umami intake to the regulation of aggressive behavior through vagus nerve activation and modulation of the iNTS-CeA neural circuitry.
The session was moderated by dr. Bethasiwi Purbasari, Sp.S., Ph.D. (Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine UB) and proceeded interactively through an engaging discussion that enriched students’ understanding of current developments in international neurobiomedical research.
Subsequently, students received information regarding academic support services, beginning with an Introduction to Universitas Brawijaya Library Services presented by UB Library. This session provided guidance on access to learning resources, scientific journal databases, and research support facilities.
The program continued with the presentation of the BPPM Research Roadmap by the Head of BPPM, Dr. dr. Dian Nugrahenny, M.Biomed., who outlined the direction of research development, publication strategies, and quality improvement initiatives within PSMIB.
Students were also introduced to Laboratory Services, including the Biomedical Laboratory, Physiology Laboratory, Pharmacology Laboratory, Biochemistry Laboratory, Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, Parasitology Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, and LPHC. This session was delivered by Dr. Nuning Winaris, S.Si., M.Sc. and Indah Wulandari, S.AB, providing an overview of laboratory facilities and procedures to support student research activities.
After the break (Ishoma), the program resumed with a Curriculum and Learning Process Socialization at PSIB, delivered by dr. Aulia Rahmi Pawestri, Ph.D. (Trop. Med.), who explained the curriculum structure, Outcome-Based Education (OBE) system, and stages of academic progression.
This was followed by a session on Monitoring and Evaluation (Monev) at PSIB, presented by Dr. Nuning Winaris, S.Si., M.Sc., emphasizing the importance of periodic evaluation in maintaining academic quality and ensuring timely completion of study.
To conclude the motivational segment, the Student Association (Dema) presented a session on Tips and Tricks for Succeeding as a PSIB Student, delivered by I Gusti Ngurah Agung Wiwekananda, sharing academic experiences and time management strategies during graduate study.
The series of activities concluded with the Course Registration (KRS) session, guided by dr. Happy Kurnia Permatasari, Ph.D. and dr. Aulia Rahmi Pawestri, Ph.D. (Trop. Med.), ensuring that new students understood the course enrollment procedures in accordance with the applicable curriculum.
Through this program, it is expected that new students of the Even Semester Academic Year 2025/2026 will gain a comprehensive understanding of the academic system, optimally utilize available facilities, and prepare themselves to undertake their educational and research journey at the Master’s Program in Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya.
