COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORTS

Master Program in Biomedical Science, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Brawijaya has a responsibility to take on a large role and contribution in solving the health problems that occur primarily in the Malang city. It is required the support and participation of all stakeholders from the public, government and private. Medicinal plants has been utilized by the public for health care and cure of various diseases. Until now there are 7000 species of medicinal plants in Indonesia were identified, however only 20% is utilized effectively. Drug from natural ingredients is a Family Medicinal Plant (TOGA). There are some herbal remedies more value than synthetic drugs. Some of them are without side effects when used at normal doses, moreover the application is simple, and the price is cheaper. To assist the government in promoting TOGA, it is needed to hold seminars, counseling and training to increase knowledge and skills of PKK members in terms of efficacy, cultivation, processing, gathering and processing of TOGA .

1.  Objectives

  1. Increase the knowledge and skills to grow TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare, etc.) on the PKK members in Malang city
  2. Increase knowledge about the use, storage and side effects of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare, etc.) on the PKK members in Malang city
  3. Socialize information in the form of written media about the efficacy of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare, etc.) on the PKK members and schools in Malang city.

2.  Problem Solving Framework

Frameworks of problem solving are:

  1. Identify the level of knowledge and benefits about the efficacy of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare, etc.) through a questionnaire.
  2. The provision of counseling about cultivation (planting and processing of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare, etc.)) on the PKK members in Malang city
  3. Evaluation of activities before and after counseling and training about the importance of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare, etc.) by monitoring the TOGA pilot land in the Malang City.

 3. Strategic Targets

The activity target was the PKK members in neighborhoods and district of Tlogomas in Malang city because they have a functional and strategic position as a communication and delivery media of a wide range of ideas and at the same executing time

4.  Relevance

This activity is the application of research result in the Faculty of Medicine (FKUB) involving  community leaders at village level (PKK). The benefits gained are to increase knowledge and efficacy of TOGA as well as the development of TOGAl quality. For the PKK, PKK members can improve the knowledge as well as housewives so that they can develop TOGA in their homes.

 5.  Method

  1. PKK members in the village invited were given counseling and training about the management of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare). Before the demonstration and practice, participants were given a lecture on how the cultivation and processing of TOGA as well as about the efficacy of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare) for health.
  2. Conducting seminars about socialization of research results that have been conducted by lecturers and students of MPBS UB to the public.
  3. Socialization about the efficacy of TOGA in school (SMP), provision of TOGA seed (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare), and monitoring and evaluation of program implementation.    

6.  Evaluation Plan

The evaluation will be conducted before and after the counseling and training activities about the importance of TOGA (Kelor, Mahkota Dewa and Pare) through questionnaires and monitoring of pilot land of TOGA in the Tlogomas district, Malang city.
